Reading C team beats Lawrence 6-0
The Rockets ran into a tougher than expected opponent on Sunday in the Lawrence Lancers, but came away with a hard fought, 6-0 victory in front of a big crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The captains of the game were MacArthy Dolan, Bryan LaFortune, Brady Comenos and Brendan Egan.
The Rockets received the opening kick-off and drove down to the field, led by big runs from Jack Murphy and Zach Lindmark, but were stopped at the 10 yard line and turned the ball over on downs. The Lancers were stuffed on their opening possession and forced to punt, which was blocked by the Rockets. Four plays later, Ryan Fitzgerald punched it in, with the help of a big push from his offensive line, led by Jacob Whitmer, Robert Savio, Matty O’Malley, Shea Healey and Reily Learned for what would be the only score of the game and the Rockets went ahead 6-0.
Throughout the remainder of the first half, the defense’s dominated and forced a series of punts and turnover on downs. The Rockets held the Lancers to 1 first down the entire half. On the last play of the half, Fitzgerald broke free on what appeared to be a 90-yard TD run, but was called back due to a penalty, which ended the half.
The Lancers received the 2nd half kick-off, but went the wrong way due to some big tackles for loss from Caminos, Dolan, Thomas Lafferty, LaFortune, Jake Palm, George Rodgers and Jacob Whitmer. As the 3rd quarter ran down, the Rockets were forced to punt and the Lancers got the ball to start the 4th.
The 4th quarter started much like the 3rd, with the Lancers with the ball and going the wrong direction, with big defensive plays by Palm and fumble recovery by Murphy. The Rockets got a handful of first downs, but stalled again and Palm booted a 35 yard punt that would lead to the final Lancers possession of the game. The Lancers were backed up again and after a series of big stops, turned the ball over again on a fumble recovered by Palm. The Rockets needed one first down to run out the clock and got it on a big run from who else, but Fitzgerald. Murphy took a knee and the Rockets escaped with the victory.
