Reading B’s lose high scoring affair to Westford Acton Boxborough, 38-32

The Reading B’s hit the road Sunday, bringing their 2-1 season record to Leary Field in Acton to play the Knights of Westford Acton Boxborough.

Reading’s Captains for the third game of the season were Ryan O’Malley, Carter Learned, Jackson Tucker, Jack Dougherty, and Andrew Jackvony. The Knights received the opening kick-off from Reading’s Brendan Lindmark and started at their own 48 yard line. The Knights moved the ball to the Reading 30 yard line until a sack by Tucker slowed their momentum. The Knights regrouped and completed a pass play to the Reading 22 yard line and then on next play, the quarterback ran into the end zone for the touchdown. The Knights tacked on the 2 point extra kick for an 8-0 lead with six minutes to go in the first quarter.

Readings Thomas Merkle received the ensuing kick at the Reading 25 yard line and returned it all the way to the Knights 49 yard line. On Readings’ first offensive play, Dougherty broke through for the 49 yard touchdown run for a quick response to the Knights score. Reading was not able to convert the extra kick, so score was Knights 8-6 with five minutes to go in the first quarter.

The Knights offense than took over at their own 45 yard line. Westford quickly broke through for the long touchdown run from the Reading 45 yard line and the score was Knights 16-6 with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter.

Reading’s offense came on for its second series, from their own 25 yard line, and Dougherty again found space for a run all the way to the Knights’ 15 yard line. After a personal foul penalty on the Knights brought the ball to the Westford 8 yard line, Dougherty took the first and goal carry in for the touchdown. Score was Knights 16-12, with one minute left in the first quarter.

It was the Knights offense turn again as they received the kick at their own 48 yard line and on 2nd down, the QB got outside the Rockets defense and ran in for their third touchdown of the game. The Knights converted the extra kick again and increased their lead over Reading to 24-12. Reading returned the ensuing kick to midfield as the first quarter finally ended.

Reading’s offense quickly moved the ball down the field, with strong runs by Max Leone and Dougherty, to the Knights 38 yard line. Reading than hit on a touchdown throw from Dougherty to Dylan Sigsbury and cut the score to Knights 24-18 with four minutes left in the first half.

Westford’s offense took over at midfield and on first play, the Knights completed a long catch and run for another touchdown. The Knights converted the extra kick and extended the lead to 32-18 with three minutes left in the first half.

It was than Reading’s turn to march down the field and Dougherty did just that by getting free for another touchdown run to make it Knights 32-26 with 2 minutes left in the first half. The half ended with the same score.

After both teams made half time adjustments to their defensive schemes, the third quarter moved quickly with neither the Knights or the Rockets able to move the ball much beyond mid-field. The score remained Knights 32-26 at the end of the third quarter.

Reading’s offense opened the fourth quarter with a drive all the way to the Westford 20 yard line but was not able to move any further and the Knights took over at their 12 yard line. The Knights were able to methodically move the chains with some hard-fought running to their 34 yard line before the Knights QB broke through for a long touchdown run and a 38-26 lead with just under two minutes left to play.

Reading was not going to give up and quickly drove the ball down to the Knights 20 yard line and capped off the drive with a strong catch by Haggerty from Sigsbury for the touchdown and cut the deficit to 38-32.

Reading attempted the onside kick without success and the Knights ran out the clock to bring the high scoring affair to a close.
